At cups and claws we partner with local rescue groups. Many people ask “where do you get your cats from?” Before opening this business, we did not really think much about where rescue animals came from or how it really works.
In the world of animal welfare, understanding the differences between "rescue," "shelter," and "humane society" is essential. While it’s common for people to use these terms interchangeably, each represents a unique type of organization with distinct missions and functions. Recognizing these differences empowers you to make informed choices in supporting animal welfare. This blog post explores the specific roles and characteristics of rescues, shelters, and humane societies, providing insight into how they contribute to animal care.
“Many people use these terms interchangeably: nonprofit, charity, exempt organization, and 501c3." Shelters and Humane societies often partner with smaller private rescue groups that are 501c3 which “is just one category of organizations, considered public charities, private foundations, or private operating foundations, but it is the primary nonprofit status through which donations made to the organization are tax-deductible” In reality, an organization could be one of those, all of those, or somewhere in between. We are a private LLC and partner with a variety of 501c3 groups.
What is an Animal Rescue?
Animal rescues are non-profit organizations that primarily save animals from situations like abandonment, abuse, or neglect. For instance, organizations like Garfield's rescue group specialize in rescuing animals from rural areas and providing them safe havens. Typically, rescues rely heavily on a network of volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to rescue animals in need.
Additionally, animal rescues often use foster-based programs. Instead of housing animals in a central facility, they place them in temporary homes. This approach allows rescued animals to receive personal care in a nurturing environment, which can significantly increase their chances of finding a forever home. A 2022 study showed that fostered animals had a 70% higher adoption rate compared to those kept in shelters. Cups and Claws in fact is a large public foster home that allows for felines to live in a cage free environment that resembles a home environment.
Rescues typically conduct thorough screenings of prospective adopters to ensure that their animals go to loving and responsible homes. This vetting process underscores the commitment rescues have to long-term animal welfare. When you apply to adopt at our cat lounge, your application goes through the rescue groups' process.
Understanding Animal Shelters
Animal shelters are facilities designed to care for homeless or stray animals. Unlike rescues, shelters accept animals without bias for breed, species, or health status. They might be run by local governments or private organizations, and their primary goal is to provide care and shelter to as many animals as possible.
Shelters are equipped to handle larger populations and often employ trained staff to help with the care. They offer diverse services, including adoption programs, spaying and neutering, vaccinations, and sometimes rehabilitation for animals with health problems.
However, shelters often face capacity challenges. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that approximately 3.2 million cats enter U.S. shelters annually. Space limitations can force shelters to make tough choices, including euthanasia. This reality highlights the urgent need for community support, especially regarding spaying and neutering, which can help control pet populations, provide better health to your pets, and reduce the number of animals entering shelters. This is one way in which our cat lounge serves the community. We help reduce this number.
The Role of Humane Societies
Humane societies focus on promoting the humane treatment of animals. They may run shelters or rescue programs but tend to emphasize education, advocacy, and community engagement. For example, the Humane Society of the United States engages in legislative advocacy to address issues like animal mills and animal transport regulations.
Beyond direct animal care, humane societies often conduct public awareness campaigns. They might organize school outreach programs or community events that promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. In 2021, a survey showed that over 60% of respondents had increased their awareness of animal welfare issues due to humane society campaigns.
Their broader focus means humane societies contribute to long-lasting changes in how communities treat animals. This includes promoting spaying, neutering, and fostering awareness of shelter adoption.
The Interconnection of Rescues, Shelters, and Humane Societies
Rescues, shelters, and humane societies, while distinct, often work together to enhance animal welfare. For years shelters have partnered with other shelters and independent 501c3 rescues to help transfer animals to environments where they are more likely to thrive. Some organizations are breed-specific, some take special needs medical cases, some focus on senior pets, and some take whatever pets they have room and resources for. Each shelter or rescue has its own networks of support that they can reach out to for donations, fosters, volunteers, adopters, etc”. AKA known as a partnership agreement. These partnerships not only save more lives, but they can also be immensely beneficial for the needs of the individual animals
For instance, a shelter might partner with a rescue to find homes for animals that need more specialized care or have better adoption prospects. Conversely, rescues can assist shelters during crises, such as natural disasters like hurricanes and other natural disasters. Humane societies frequently provide resources and funding to both rescues and shelters, empowering them to serve their communities better. They often orchestrate events that unite various organizations, presenting a stronger front for animal welfare efforts.
This collaboration fosters an environment where community members feel motivated to get involved. Whether adopting from a shelter, volunteering at a rescue, or supporting the advocacy of a humane society, EVERY small action contributes to a larger cause.
However, there are many people that say they are a ‘rescue’ simply because they trap cats, and bring them to their homes, or find cats from people surrendering them. Now, many of these people are doing good, however some are causing more pain to animals-- –hoarding situations, dog fighting rings, feeding their pet carnivores, breeding, and just plain evil in our eyes. YES this all happens daily, weekly and monthly. Although the vast majority of the rescues we have been in contact with are wonderful organizations run by caring, loving people who want to help animals, a small percentage are accepting animals under a false pretense.
We partner with reputable animal rescue organizations which means that some of our feline friends have been at the shelter, or in a private foster home or in an abusive situation and rescued by a charitable organization. Therefore, your visit to the cat lounge provides them with an opportunity to feel a homelike environment AND humans get to relax, work, play and date in an eclectic space contributing to this goal.
Making a Difference in Animal Welfare
Regardless of which organization you feel drawn to, know that your support carries weight. There are several impactful ways to help: consider adopting a pet, volunteering, or donating supplies or funds to these vital organizations. Visiting our cat lounge or any other in the US, helps felines feel safe and loved and provides a nurturing atmosphere where they can find their furever homes.
Adoption is one of the best ways to contribute to the mission. But, If adopting isn't an option for you, visiting us or volunteering is also immensely beneficial. Rescues and shelters rely on volunteers for daily tasks, from socializing animals to organizing fundraising events. For example, we have many people come in once per month to show the new feline friends that not all humans are bad!
Donations/gifts also play a critical role in supporting animal welfare organizations. Every contribution helps cover costs for food, shelter, and medical care for animals. Even simple items like blankets, collars, or toys can significantly improve the lives of animals waiting for their forever homes. Cups and Claws accepts open containters of dry food, sheets, bath mats, gently used toys. medicines, and more. We make sure that our rescue partners receive these items as needed!
Final Thoughts
There are SOOO many rescue groups in our state of Virginia and in the USA (as well as all over the world).
Each group has their own philosophy, rules, regulations, adoption procedures, etc. Rescue groups come in all shapes and sizes with some rescuing hundreds of animals a year to some that just rescue a handful. Some groups do not actually provide care for the animals, but instead act as a middleman and make referrals to owners or maintain lists of available animals. You should look for a rescue group whose philosophy you agree with, that closely matches your own. In our research, we too had to align ourselves with groups that shared our philosophy of care and well being of felines.
Rescue organizations, animal shelters, and humane societies all contribute significantly to improving animal welfare, each with its unique philosophy and approach. Rescues specialize in fostering specific breeds, shelters provide care to a diverse population, and humane societies focus on advocacy and education.
Understanding the distinctions among these organizations helps you engage more effectively in the animal welfare community. Whether visiting us, adopting a rescue feline, volunteering, or donating, your actions can save lives and improve conditions for countless animals in need.
And Just so you all know, when you come in and apply for a feline, that does not guarantee an approval. They may have a better fit for the cat or maybe your dynamic does not match that particular feline’s needs. Remember these cuties have been through a journey and usually not happily. Also, our partner contracts state clearly that all adopters surrender directly back to us or the rescue group for ANY reason. The adoption fees are nothing compared to the effort, love, care and monetary value they put into EACH feline they save. Sometimes its hundreds to thousands. So please, do not consider $100 a high fee for the rescue of the feline you are looking to bring home. This may seem a lot on your purse strings, but it allows the groups to continue to rescue felines in need.
Every effort counts, and together, we can make a difference. Thank you for taking the steps to visit our cat lounge and we hope you enjoy spending time here!
